Demonstrators chant against President Donald Trump's executive order temporarily banning immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. and suspending the nation’s refugee program Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, outside City Hall in Cincinnati. In addition, earlier in the day Mayor John Cranley declared Cincinnati a "sanctuary city," meaning city will not enforce federal immigration laws against people who are here illegally, in keeping with current policy. The Sonoma City Council is set to consider whether to declare the community a sanctuary city. The discussion at tonight’s meeting will include the city’s “commitment to diversity and to safeguarding the civil rights, safety and dignity” of all its community members. The topic is top of mind in cities across the Sonoma County, the state and the country in light of Donald Trump’s push to increase the pace of deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants and a federal crackdown on sanctuary cities.
