Tens of thousands of California teenagers are participating in a program that allows them to pre-register to vote. Secretary of State Alex Padilla says there are nearly 90-thousand of them.

The program started in September of 2016, and it allows 16 and 17-year olds to have their voter registration activated automatically when they turn 18. The Secretary of State’s office says nearly 90-thousand teens have already pre-registered. Nearly 44-percent of those who signed up registered as “No Party Preference.” More than a third registered as Democrats, while just over ten-percent registered as Republican. Voter pre-registrations may rise even higher once the California Motor Voter law launches in April. That will automatically pre-register teenagers who apply for a driver’s license or ID.
