A bill limiting when a person’s immigration status can be disclosed in court is headed to Governor Brown’s desk. Senate Bill 785 has bipartisan support, with half of the Republicans in the state Senate voting in favor of it, while the Assembly passed it 67 to one. Co-author Senator Scott Weiner of San Francisco says the bill aims to make immigrants feel “safer coming to court” and will “improve public safety.” Brown has 12 days to sign the bill, and if he does it becomes law and takes effect immediately.
