Senator Kamala Harris is joining several lawmakers in demanding the Department of Homeland Security stop separating children from their families at the border.

The California Democrat is co-sponsoring legislation that will put a moratorium on the expansion of detention facilities. It will also increase oversight of ICE facilities by the Office of the Inspector General and reduce detention beds by 50-percent. According to Harris, this legislation is about children, their families, and whether the United States is going to be a compassionate government or a cruel government.
