Thefts Are Up Statewide Since Voters Passed Prop 47 in 2014

According to a study released this week by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California, car burglaries, shoplifting and other thefts all spiked, but researchers said Prop 47 did not lead to the state’s 13 percent increase in violent crime. Prop 47 lowered criminal sentences for drug possession, theft, identity theft and other offenses from felonies to misdemeanors. The measure led to the lowest arrest rate in state history in 2015.
