Historian Sharon McGriff-Payne of Vallejo, author of “John Grider’s Century: African Americans in Solano, Napa and Sonoma Counites, 1845-1925” discusses how she began researching these stories because she didn’t know the local history of the region and she was curious, what she found in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s in the North Bay, what was most surprising to her during her research, and how much information was readily available and how difficult it was to find:
