A fire completely destroyed a home west of Santa Rosa early this morning with one body found in the ruins according to officials.

According to the Press Democrat, nearby residents were awoken by flames and called for help around 5:15am to Duer Road off Highway 12 in the region between West Santa Rosa and Sebastopol.

The first firefighters on the scene were from Sebastopol and found the single-story home completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters also responded from Santa Rosa, Windsor, Rincon Valley and Gold Ridge.

When the flames had been diminished, firefighters went inside to find the body of a man, according to Windsor Fire Batalion Chief Matt Gustafson.

People who lived in the region said the elderly man inside lived alone.

When flames broke through the roof, they could be witnessed throughout the area. Around 5:30 this morning, Santa Rosa fire officials issued an alert to warn those living in the area.

The fire didn’t appear to be suspicious, according to to Gustafson. An investigation into the cause will begin around 8am this morning.
