Universal(NEW YORK) — The debut of Jordan Peele’s Us — already a lock to win the weekend box office — did even better than expected, delivering an estimated $70.25 million on its way to posting the biggest opening ever for an original horror film, topping last year’s A Quiet Place, which debuted with $50.2 million.
Additionally, Us posted the largest opening for an original, R-rated film, unseating Ted‘s $54.4 million in 2012. The follow-up to 2017’s Get Out — starring Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Elisabeth Moss — also logged the third-biggest opening for a horror film, period, behind 2017’s It, which earned $123.4 million, and last October’s Halloween, which debuted with $76 million.
Disney-Marvel’s Captain Marvel also had a good weekend, despite dropping to second place in its third week of release. The film delivered an estimated $35 million stateside and $52.1 million overseas, to push it past the $900 million plateau worldwide. The film now ranks as the 10th-highest-earning release domestically in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will soon become the seventh film in the MCU to top $1 billion globally. The animated feature Wonder Park placed third in its second week of release, grabbing an estimated $8.75 million. Its earnings stateside now stand at just shy of $30 million.
Fourth place belongs to the teen drama Five Feet Apart, pulling in an estimated $8.75 million in its second week out. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, rounded out the top five with an estimated $6.5 million.
Hotel Mumbai, the Dev Patel-Armie Hammer-led biopic opening in limited release this weekend, delivered an estimated $86,492 from four theaters.
