What’s the definition of a New York second? I’m Tom Simoneau with today’s wine minute here to say the amount of time it took me to RSVP to Chateau Montelena once I received an invitation to attend a 25-Year Retrospective tasting of Cabernet Sauvignon, 25-years consecutively 1984 through 2008! The day began with opening remarks by founder Jim Barrett as we strapped ourselves into a time machine and ventured back to the early days of Napa Valley winemaking. Jim’s son, Bo Barrett, began the journey when the vineyards were ten years old with the Montelena Estate 1984. The Montelena European style showed through the 80’s and into what Bo called the mighty nineties with 10 stunning vintages. The 1994… a dream come true. The 2000’s tested Montelena’s intestinal fortitude. With only 3 of the 25 wines over 14% alcohol. Chateau Montelena is on a 50 year plan, 25 down, 25 to go. And I’ve already RSVP’d to the 50-Year Retrospective.
