Father's Day History

6/10/2012

Father’s Day… A little history and some wine suggestions, I’m Tom Simoneau with today’s wine minute here to say it was in 1910 in Washington State that the first Father’s Day was celebrated. But, it wasn’t until 1972 that Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday. So controversial was this “2nd Christmas for men”, as the nay sayers referred to Father’s Day, that Mother’s Day was almost abolished, replacing her day with Parents Day honoring both mom and dad. In any case, next Sunday is Father’s Day. It’s a great time to splurge on your wine loving dad. From Napa the Bordeaux blend Opus One, expensive, but he’ll love you for it. From Sonoma, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Jordan will do just fine. If he loves Zinfandel, you can’t miss with a Bella or Ravenswood. For Chardonnay, any from Dave Ramey. So here’s to you dad, because without you, there wouldn’t be any me!
