Decoration Day!

5/22/2012

This weekend we’re celebrating Decoration Day, I’m Tom Simoneau with today’s wine minute here to say Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation’s Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, right about the time the first Zinfandel grapes were being planted in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. So this weekend we have two things to celebrate and honor, those who have died in all of America’s wars and America’s grape Zinfandel. Look for a Zinfandel from Dry Creek Vineyards, Passalacqua, Mauritson, or Dutcher Crossing. All big, rich Zins perfect for baby back ribs, tri-tip, or the American Classic – hamburgers and hotdogs.  Turn on the ballgame and fire up the grill. It’s Memorial Day. Summer is finally here! Potato chips anyone?
