Facebook is under fire for failing to rein in fake and biased news stories that some believe may have swayed the presidential election. Its predicament stems from this basic conundrum: It exercises great control over the news its users see, but it declines to assume the editorial responsibility that traditional publishers do. Facebook is putting up 20-million dollars to help solve some of Silicon Valley’s toughest problems, starting with affordable housing.  The social media giant also is investing 625-thousand dollars in job training for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  Another 500-thousand will provide legal help to people threatened with eviction or other forms of landlord abuse.  Facebook is joining with nonprofits, community groups, and local governments in a partnership announced late last week.
