The Santa Rosa City Council is unanimous in its approval of a grant application to set up a regional bike sharing program. Transportation planners from both Sonoma and Marin counties are jointly applying for about two-million dollars in state grant money to fund a network of about 180 rentable bicycles based around SMART train stations. If approved, the funds would be used to purchase bicycles and install the infrastructure, including GPS technology that would allow riders to track down a bike to rent. A preliminary plan called for 100 bikes for Sonoma County, including 40 for Santa Rosa, and 40 for Marin County.
