The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office is lagging behind the Santa Rosa Police Department in recruiting and training Spanish-speaking deputies.  About ten-percent of the 236 deputies at the Sheriff’s Office earn bilingual pay, compared to 43-percent of Santa Rosa police officers.  Pay could be part of the reason, with deputies earning 90 cents more an hour if they’re fluent in Spanish, while Santa Rosa officers get paid an additional five-percent of hourly base pay.
