Freight locomotives are set to sound their horns across Sonoma and Marin counties as part of federally mandated safety tests. Trains along tracks from Novato to Petaluma will sound their horns four to five times a night starting at 9:30 tonight. Afterwards, tests will happen from 9:30 to four in the morning Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 9:30 to nine Saturdays and Sundays, possibly through mid-April. Once testing between Novato and Petaluma is done, horns will begin to sound in Cotati, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa and Windsor for as much as six months.
