Lawmakers Propose Law That Would Limit When California Police Officers Can Shoot Their Guns

Some lawmakers are proposing legislation that would limit when California police officers can shoot their guns. The bill, introduced yesterday by Democratic Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, would change the standard from “reasonable force” to “necessary force.” Democratic Assemblyman Kevin McCarty of Sacramento says the bill aims to urge officers to try and deescalate confrontations or use less lethal weapons.

According to lawmakers and the American Civil Liberties Union, officers shot and killed over 160 people in California last year.
