David Swing, President of the California Police Chief’s Association, says now law enforcement officials and lawmakers are disagreeing about the best way to keep communities safe.

The California Attorney General’s Office says in 2017, there were over 700 incidents involving a police officer that resulted in the discharge of a firearm, injury, or death. Over 170 Californians were killed in confrontations with police since the start of the study. Out of all of the incidents, about 350 of the suspects involved were armed. State lawmakers are hoping to reduce violent confrontations with police with a bill that would change use of force policy to say “necessary force” instead of “reasonable force.”
