AB-2219, aiming to protect renters from being evicted, is passing the Assembly floor to Governor Brown’s desk. Assemblymember Phil Ting says it applies to families who are struggling to make their rent.

The legislation would make it mandatory for landlords to accept third party payments, for example, if a renter gets financial support from their church or local organizations. The bill includes protections for landlords if the assistance check bounces and states these third parties don’t have the right to occupancy. Ting says this would protect renters from homelessness and would prevent landlords from unreasonably kicking out tenants.
