Assemblymember Ash Kalra is pressing Governor Jerry Brown to sign his bill aimed at expanding the assisted living program. Assemblyman Kalra says AB 2233 will make changes to current regulations that do not help the elderly as it should.

On a bipartisan effort, the legislature overwhelmingly passed Assembly Bill 2233, sending it to the governor for approval. It will increase the assisted living waiver from three-thousand to 18-thousand-500 slots. Kalra created the bill for low-income seniors who can’t afford care at home and don’t want or need the full medical services of a nursing facility. Assisted living requires special permission under government rules and is available to fewer than four-thousand Californians. Experts say by the end of the next decade, more than 11-million Baby Boomers in California will be 60 or older.
