When should classes be cancelled because of unhealthy air? That was the question last night at a meeting with the Sonoma County Office of Education and the county health director. Superintendent Steve Harrington shares how they arrived at the guidelines they’ve established, the local agencies they consulted with, why they recommend Purple-Air.com, and addresses the negative feedback from parents:

With these guidelines in place, when air quality levels hit 275 or higher at 5am, the office will recommend school closures that day. The air is considered “very unhealthy” when the reading is between 201 and 300. Schools were closed Friday and Tuesday. To find out what the levels are in your district, visit Purple-Air.com.
