Standstill traffic on westbound Interstate 580 backs up due to the closure of the Richmond-San Rafael bridge Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, in Richmond, Calif. A major bridge connecting the San Francisco Bay Area has been closed after large chunks of concrete fell from the upper deck to the lower deck. The California Highway Patrol posted an alert about the Richmond-San Rafael bridge closure shortly before noon on Thursday, saying there was no estimated time for reopening. It was not clear what caused the concrete to fall. (AP Photo/Ben Margot)

Repair work is set to get underway on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Caltrans’ contractor will begin the permanent repairs to replace an expansion joint on the span tonight. The joint failed earlier this month and sent concrete chunks tumbling onto the lower level. Weather permitting, the work will be done overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. over the next two weeks. One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction during the work.
