Governor Gavin Newsom is considering controversial legal changes ahead of wildfire season:
Newsom announced several proposals Friday, including more legal protections for utility companies like PG&E. The Governor says no single stakeholder is responsible for the fires, which tore through the state last year, and thus no single stakeholder should bear the costs. PG&E went bankrupt after being found liable for 50-billion dollars in damages from the Camp Fire in November. Newsom’s goal is to balance the cost of wildfires with limiting litigation and putting more responsibility on insurance companies.
