Sonoma and Marin Counties Could Vote on Extending Sales Tax To Fund SMART

Sonoma and Marin counties might be voting on extending the sales tax that funds the SMART rail nine-years before it expires. The transit agency’s board yesterday voted unanimously to direct staff to start the process of putting it on the March 2020 primary ballot. Voters approved the 25-cent tax in 2008 and it’s scheduled to sunset in 2029. General Manager Farhad Mansourian told the board he can’t make long-term budget planning until the primary revenue source is guaranteed.
