California Proposes Excise Tax On Handgun and Rifle Sales

In the wake of recent mass shootings, including a deadly rampage at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, mayors across California are calling for action on a legislative bill. That bill, authored by Marin Assemblyman Marc Levine, would impose a $25 excise tax on all handgun and semiautomatic rifle sales in California.

Mayors declaring their support for AB-18 include London Breed of San Francisco, Libby Schaaf of Oakland and Sam Liccardo of San Jose. Liccardo also wants to require gun owners in his town to either carry liability insurance or pay a fee to cover taxpayer costs related to firearm violence.
