SRJC Offering Hemp Cultivation Program

Santa Rosa Junior College is now the first college in the state to offer a hemp cultivation program. According the Press Democrat, students in the program at Shone Farm planted 1,000 hemp seedlings in July. The crop will be ready this month or next month. SRJC obtained an exemption from the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors who enacted a moratorium on hemp cultivation in April. The program faculty at SRJC note that hemp cultivation could be a way for vegetable farmers and wine grape growers to get far greater economic yield from their land: hemp can be worth more than $100,000 for a full acre, while wine grapes average about $13,000 per acre.
