California Lawmakers Attempting To Enact Landmark Contract Workers Bill

California lawmakers are moving to enact a landmark bill that classifies contract workers as employees. The bill approved by the State Senate on Tuesday would cover more than a million workers, including many at companies like Uber and Lyft. The State Assembly is expected to pass the bill and send it on to Governor Gavin Newsom, who has indicated he’ll sign it. Newsom wrote in a Labor Day op-ed that tech companies and other employers are eroding basic workers’ protections such as “minimum wage, paid sick days, and health insurance benefits.”
