The California Senate is agreeing to an amendment on a bill which would allow compensation to college athletes. Senator Nancy Skinner told colleagues yesterday Senate Bill 206 isn’t about punishing colleges.

Skinner says the bill would make sure any contracts a college athlete agrees to would not interfere with their school’s athletic team’s contract. The Oakland Democrat believes the bill would help all kinds of athletes, not just those who play extremely popular sports. The NCAA sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom yesterday saying the bill would give California schools an advantage over all other schools in the nation. The NCAA also says they’re already working on changing the rules so college athletes can appropriately use their name, image, and likeness. The group also called the bill unconstitutional.
