Sonoma Valley High School Cancels Football Season Following Friday’s Fight With Petaluma

The football season is over early for Sonoma Valley High School following a brawl during Friday night’s homecoming game against Petaluma. The Sonoma Index-Tribune says the melee was likely the result of some late hits against Petaluma’s kickoff receiver. The score was 35-14 in Petaluma’s favor when the bench-clearing fight occurred and a brief on-field meeting of officials, principals, and athletic directors resulted in the game being called off with eleven minutes left to play. Petaluma was declared the winner and Sonoma Valley’s season came to an abrupt end when eleven of their players were ejected and therefore ineligible to play the following week. Next week’s final game of the season versus Vintage High School is forfeited because it would be unsafe to have students play positions they hadn’t practiced for.
