Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the passing of the California voter referendum prop. 187, which denied all public services to illegal immigrants and made state employees mandatory reporters to immigration agents. In a video, the California Latino caucus, including Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez, “thanked” Governor Pete Wilson for backing the infamous initiative since many Latino citizens became more politically active as a result.
It was immediately ruled unconstitutional following his approval. The Cato Institute, a center-right think tank, says the Republican party has yet to recover in the state since giving full support to prop. 187. The GOP went from virtually splitting the Latino vote with Democrats to gaining less than 20% of their support by 1998.
