A legislative effort to change the process of voter registration at California’s Department of Motor Vehicles has been voted down in committee. On a party-line vote, the Senate Elections Committee has rejected an effort to restore “opt-in” voter registration, which has disappointed the bill’s author, Republican Patricia Bates.

Senator Bates believes that the incomplete DMV application is the root cause of the well-documented errors. She’s already working on new legislation that would add such an option.
