Bill Proposes Insurance Companies To Cover More Mental Health Treatment

Legislation introduced yesterday would require insurance companies in California to cover more mental health treatment. Author of the bill Democratic Senator Scott Wiener says preventative care is key to treating mental health and substance abuse issues that can spiral out of control.

SB 855 would force insurers to pay for mental health treatment deemed “necessary” by primary care physicians and other healthcare officials. Former Rhode Island Representative and mental health advocate Patrick Kennedy spoke in favor of the bill, saying insurance companies have a responsibility to treat mental illness and substance abuse addiction with the same seriousness as someone undergoing treatment for cancer.
