Critics Raise Issues With Governor’s State Budget Proposal

While Governor Newsom’s state budget proposal invests in the state’s social safety net with money for problems like homelessness, victims advocates argue that the proposal does not have enough funding for preventing domestic violence. Krista Niemczyk with the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence says without ongoing prevention investments, California will continue to bear the cost for sexual and domestic violence.

Niemczyk says domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women. And while the last two budgets have had one time funding for prevention, she says the focus should be on getting ongoing funding.
