New Proposal Would Require Caltrans To Assist Homeless

A new proposal in the state legislature would require Caltrans to find housing for homeless people before clearing their camps. It would create a new classification of Caltrans employees who would visit the people living in homeless camps and try to connect them with housing and supportive services. The measure would also require the department to post a link on its website for people to report homeless camps and require the department to send workers to assess the reported camps within 24 hours. Under current requirements, Caltrans must post a notice at a camp three days before clearing the campsite.
