An increase in canine distemper cases among California carnivores has officials with the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife warning dog owners to take action to protect their four-legged friends. CDFW Veterinarian Deanna Clifford says one of the easiest things to do to keep your dog safe is to avoid leaving its food outside.

Clifford says the best thing a dog owner can do is to keep their pet up to date on vaccines. She says the protection they offer can also keep non-vaccinated dogs from transmitting canine distemper to wild animals.
