Scammers are on the prowl posing telemarketers and setting up websites for fake charities in California. The state’s Attorney General Xavier Becerra issued a warning telling residents to be cautious and on the look out for these dishonest schemes. Becerra said that real charities have to be registered in California, and the Attorney General’s office has an online registry of legitimate organizations. If you get an email linking to a suspicious website or telemarketer asking for money, Becerra urges residents to do their research before giving out any personal or financial information. Go to oag.ca.gov/charities for a list of relief organizations registered with the state.
