California Governor Gavin Newsom isn’t ordering the closure of all state beaches and parks after all. In his daily briefing Thursday, he said he was only ordering Orange County beaches closed because they were jammed over the weekend with minimal social distancing. A California Police Chief’s Association notice issued yesterday warned Newsom would order a statewide shutdown, but Newsom says that notice didn’t come from his office. The Police Association’s note sparked immediate backlash, with Humboldt County’s sheriff calling it unconstitutional and refusing to enforce it. But Newsom said he never intended to close all beaches or any parks and that his office has been consistent with its message.
