SMART Train is set to take control of North Bay Freight Hauling. The proposed deal which will be before the SMART Board today will allow the passenger service to buy 45 miles of track rights and equipment for $4 million from Northwestern Pacific Railroad Company. The state will also chip in another $4 million to the company to pay off debt owed by the North Coast Railroad Authority. SMART Board Member Deb Fudge says the money for the purchase will also help fix the rail lines.
The money for the purchase is coming from a 2018 bill authored by State Senator McGuire which allows for the takeover of the rail lines and started the dissolution of the North Coast Railroad Authority.
