Two Bay Area counties are on the state’s list of areas being advised to keep indoor bars closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Governor Newsom and the state’s Department of Public Health named Contra Costa County and Santa Clara County, in addition to Sacramento and a number of Central Valley and Southern California counties, as areas that should keep their indoor bars closed due to surging case numbers. According to Newsom’s statement, bars are a hotbed for the virus due to alcohol consumption reducing compliance with state recommendations like wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. And the volume of noise inside a bar often leads to raised voices, which means a greater chance of projecting tiny droplets that spread the coronavirus.
