Santa Rosa Police Department is looking to collect certain demographic data on people its officers stop: earlier than required. The Press Democrat reports that the department will begin collecting this data from pedestrian and traffic stops by January 1st, 2021. If executed properly, it would be started a full year before being required to do so by the state Racial and Identity Profiling Act passed in 2015. The department currently sends a report every year on officers’ use of force, citizen complaints and arrest demographics. This announcement comes on the heels of countrywide protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.
