If California wants to save money, the state should close five state prisons. The Legislative Analyst Office made the recommendation yesterday. By closing five adult institutions in addition to the planned closures of youth prisons, California would save $1.5 billion per year by 2025. Due to the pandemic, the state’s 35 prisons are holding 21% fewer inmates.
