The Santa Rosa Schools board wants help from the public in renaming James Monroe Elementary School. Last night, the board trimmed down potential new names for the school from 27 to 16 which include options like Dolores Huerta, Charles M. Schulz, George Ortiz, and Tony Hawk. Even Monroe is an option as local historians contend that the school was originally named after a pioneering family located in the area, because the original name was simply Monroe Elementary School. “James” was added in the early 1980s, referring to the President and slaveholder James Monroe. The survey will run from tomorrow until April 16th with the results presented to the board at their April 28th meeting. The survey will be available at the site below.
