Governor Gavin Newsom is announcing an agreement worth over $500 million with state lawmakers to help prevent wildfires as California faces another dry year. The funding will come from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund and the state’s General Fund. Newsom says the approach needs to include home hardening, defensible space and better forest management. He says the new reality is the hots are getting hotter and the drys are getting drier. Weather experts note conditions in California have been drier than normal and the wildfire risk could be even higher than last year. Newsom made the announcement at Shaver Lake, the site of last year’s massive Creek Fire.
