Governor Newsom’s veto of a bill led to a crisis in the disposal of chemically treated wood waste. The veto of Senate Bill 68 last year prohibited the dumping of lumber used in home construction, fencing, and decks. However, the Department of Toxic Substances Control allowed companies to continue discarding hazardous wood waste in landfills after the agency created an emergency waiver process. However, the crisis was only temporarily averted. Lawmakers are working on overturning Newsom’s veto with AB 332, which would make the dumping of wood waste legal in the state again.
