Nearly three in every four Californians have received the first two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. But, according to the California Department of Public Health, far fewer have received their booster shots. Data shows Black and Latino residents have one of the lowest vaccination rates, while elementary-school-aged children have the lowest vaccination levels of all. Dr. Elizabeth Hudson, with Kaiser Permanente, says there are many reasons why people, especially in communities of color, don’t want to get vaccinated. She says for many it could be the historic mistreatment from the medical system, while for others, it could be misinformation about the vaccines.
