Twenty-three severely debeaked hens are now living at an animal sanctuary in Sonoma. The hens are recovering at Charlie’s Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary after most of their upper beaks were removed, leaving them severely emaciated. They were rescued from a feed store in Cloverdale. A customer of the feed store organized the rescue of the birds after watching their health suffer for months. It’s believed that, as chicks, the hens were exposed to the heat of a debeaking device for too long by mistake.
