California state lawmakers, several mayors and two psychiatrist associations are announcing new legislation. They say it’ll modernize the state’s mental health system. The California “Big City Mayors Coalition” is a bipartisan group of mayors from the state’s 13 largest cities. They’re co-sponsors of two bills. Senate bill 43 would update criteria for conservatorship and that means if someone is gravely disabled, the state can take over their care. Senate bill 363 would establish “real-time, online access” to show available beds to help providers secure treatment more quickly.
