Santa Rosa Historian Joann Mitchell Passes Away at 91

A local historian has died. Joann Mitchell passed away on February 7th at the age of 91. Mitchell moved to Santa Rosa at the age of 26 from Utah. She partnered with longtime Press Democrat columnist Gaye LeBaron to release two books about the history of Santa Rosa in 1985 and 1993. She was also involved in several groups including the Newcomers’ Club of Santa Rosa, the American Association of University Women, the Sonoma Land Trust, the Redwood Garden Club and the League of Women Voters. Mitchell also served as a trustee for the Museum of Sonoma County and the Sonoma County Historical Society. She is survived by her husband, Jim Mitchell, and her daughter, Jan Jones of Huntington Beach.
