An animal activist is explaining his actions to a jury after charges that stemmed from two protests at poultry farms near Petaluma in 2018 and 2019. Wayne Hsiung, who is representing himself in his trial, is charged with two felony counts of trespassing and two felony counts of conspiracy. Hsiung, who delivered opening statements on Thursday, says he did not commit a crime, and was at the farms to rescue chickens and ducks he thought were being mistreated. But, prosecutors say he and other protestors stole animals from the farms, forcing each location to temporarily shut down during the incidents. Hsiung faces up to three years and eight months in prison if convicted as charged.
