Petaluma Police Increase Patrols Around Schools Friday After Kenilworth Junior High Firecracker Explosion

Petaluma Police are addressing rumors about a school shooting threat after two students set off a firecracker in a bathroom at Kenilworth Junior High School. The incident happened Wednesday when a loud “explosion” went off, similar to an M-1000 firecracker. The school was safely evacuated and the two students involved were arrested. Since then, a large amount of unsubstantiated rumors containing vague but troubling information about a planned school shooting for today at multiple Petaluma schools circulated in social groups, and over 20 reports were made to police anonymously online. However, none of the threats appear to have any substance and no credible threats have been identified. Matthew Harris, the Superintendent of Petaluma City Schools sent a message to parents saying that all schools will be in session today, and that police will have increased patrols at school sites to ensure safety. Police are also still investigating the firecracker case, trying to find out if anyone else was involved.
