A low-flying helicopter seen hovering and circling over Santa Rosa in recent days is performing subcontractor work for PG&E. On Tuesday, the utility company confirmed what the helicopter is doing, saying the crew onboard is surveying electrical equipment and nearby vegetation to reduce the risk of wildfires. The helicopter, provided by a Sacramento-based company, is outfitted with light detection and ranging or “lidar” sensors and high-resolution imagery technology. It is evaluating PG and E’s powerlines and adjacent trees in Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Rohnert Park, Forestville and Penngrove. The surveying work is expected to continue into next month.
